About the .22 Savage Hi-Power Cartridge

Cartridge Development:

The .22 Savage Hi-Power, also known in Europe as 5.6×52mmR, was developed by Charles Newton and introduced by Savage Arms in 1912 for their Savage Model 99 lever-action rifle. Derived from the .25-35 Winchester case, this cartridge was initially loaded with a 70 grain bullet reaching velocities around 2,800 ft/s, an impressive performance for its time.

Early 20th-century hunters were captivated by the cartridge's shocking power. The most iconic example came from missionary Reverend H. R. Caldwell, who famously used it to take down a 400 lb tiger in China — an event heavily featured in Savage's advertising. The round saw success in hunting red deer in Scotland and even forest buffalo in Africa, but was gradually overshadowed by newer, faster .22-caliber centerfire cartridges like the .223 Remington.

Cartridge Composition and Manufacture:

While no longer produced in the U.S., the .22 Savage Hi-Power (5.6×52mmR) is still manufactured by Norma, Sellier & Bellot, RWS, and Prvi Partizan in Europe. It features a bottlenecked brass case with a rim and typically uses FMJ or soft point bullets. Its current use is mostly in vintage firearms, combination guns, and drillings, often for roe deer hunting or small game in legal regions.
