This caliber was intended for shooting from hunting rifles and for sporting purposes.

The .308 Winchester quickly gained popularity among hunters and sport shooters due to its excellent ballistic properties and versatile use. Its stopping power, range, and accuracy became key factors in its widespread acceptance.

Cartridge Loading and Construction:

The difference between .308 Winchester and 7.62x51 NATO is primarily of a normative nature. Physically, both cartridges are very similar and can be used in mutually compatible firearms. However, there are subtle differences in specifications, particularly in cartridge pressure. The 7.62x51 NATO cartridge typically has a higher maximum pressure than .308 Winchester.
