Cartridge Development:
Developed by Smith & Wesson in 1898 as a successor to the .38 Long Colt, which was becoming insufficient mainly due to its limited stopping power and penetration.
Cartridge Composition and Manufacture:
Initially loaded with black powder, later with smokeless powder. It has been loaded with various weights by all major ammunition manufacturers, using different bullet types. Typically, only brass casings are used, cylindrical with a rimmed base.
Cartridge Popularity:
Standard issue for nearly all U.S. armed forces. The most common revolver cartridge in the civilian sector. The .38 Special is still used in standard revolver models by brands like Smith & Wesson, Colt, Uberti, Taurus, Alfa, and other smaller manufacturers. Also used in some semi-automatic pistols and repeating rifles. It's even the service cartridge of the Czech Prison Service.

The keychain loop is machined from brass and is firmly pressed into the base of the casing at the primer position, ensuring waterproofing of the keychain, setting it apart from most similar competing products.
