The 7.62x39mm AK Kalashnikov cartridge, widely known and used globally in post-WWII conflicts, was developed by Nikolai Mikhailovich Elizarov and Boris Vladimirovich Semin in 1943. First used in the SKS rifle, this cartridge is known for its moderate power and cost-effective production.

It's distinguished by its medium performance, high muzzle velocity, and capability to penetrate light ballistic vests. Used by the military, police, and civilians, it has become the most widespread ammunition type, initially serving as the Soviet Union's main cartridge until the introduction of the 5.45×39mm.

Cartridge Composition and Manufacture:

Military versions of the 7.62x39mm use slow-burning powder, filled to the brim. Older series often have faster aging powder, making them more powerful. Typically, they feature FMJ bullets with steel cores of various lengths and weights, along with specialized types like tracer, incendiary, and armor-piercing rounds. Hunting versions may include soft-point bullets or special bullets from individual manufacturers.
