About the 7.62x39mm Kalashnikov Cartridge

Development of the cartridge:

This cartridge needs no introduction. It is arguably the most widespread ammunition in the world, used on all battlefields post-World War II. It was designed by Nikolai Mikhailovich Elizarov and Boris Vladimirovich Semin in 1943 and first used in the SKS rifle.

It is a medium-powered cartridge with a very low production cost. It served as the primary cartridge of the Soviet Union until the arrival of the 5.45×39mm, which, though smaller, offers a higher muzzle velocity and greater range. Nevertheless, the 7.62x39mm remains the most prevalent type of ammunition.

This cartridge was not only used in the legendary AK-47 Kalashnikov rifle. It was designed as versatile ammunition for various weapons such as the RPK Kalashnikov machine gun and the RPD Degtyaryov machine gun. It was used by all Soviet and allied countries. In the Soviet Union, a version with a lacquered steel casing became standard, allowing factories to produce millions of these cartridges at minimal cost. This is one reason why weapons using this ammunition are so popular.

Today, these cartridges are also increasingly popular for hunting and sport.

Cartridge workmanship and design:

Military cartridges are filled to the brim with slow-burning powder. Older series often fire faster due to aged powder and perform better than new ones. Military rounds typically feature FMJ (full metal jacket) bullets with steel cores of various lengths and weights. Special-purpose bullets such as tracer, incendiary, and armor-piercing are also common. Hunting versions may feature semi-jacketed (SP) bullets or special bullets from individual manufacturers.
