About the 7.62x39mm Kalashnikov Cartridge:

Cartridge Development:

This cartridge is a staple in military history, being the most widespread ammunition used globally since World War II. It was designed in 1943 by Nikolai Mikhailovich Elizarov and Boris Vladimirovich Semin, and first used in the SKS rifle.

It is a medium-powered cartridge known for its affordability and was the primary cartridge of the Soviet Union until the 5.45×39mm cartridge, which offers higher muzzle velocity and range, was introduced. Nonetheless, the 7.62x39mm remains extensively used.

This versatile ammunition was not only used in the iconic AK-47 Kalashnikov but also in various other weapons like the RPK Kalashnikov machine gun and the RPD Degtyaryov machine gun, utilized by all Soviet and allied nations. Its lacquered steel casing was an economical choice that allowed mass production at minimal costs, contributing to the popularity of the firearms that use this ammo.

These cartridges continue to gain popularity for hunting and sports today.

Cartridge Workmanship and Design:

Military loads are typically filled with slow-burning powder and feature FMJ bullets with steel cores of varying lengths and weights. Special-purpose rounds such as tracer, incendiary, and armor-piercing types are common, while hunting versions might have semi-jacketed (SP) bullets or specialized bullets from various manufacturers.

The DOG TAG chain is highly durable, and any contamination can be cleaned with standard cleaning agents without concerns.
