About the 9x18mm Makarov Cartridge:
Development of the Cartridge:
The 9x18mm Makarov was developed in 1946 by B.V. Semin as a relatively powerful cartridge with moderate recoil, suitable for use in semi-automatic pistols. The cartridge was based on the 9x18mm Ultra, developed in 1936 by Gustav Genschow & Co. for the German Luftwaffe. Nikolai Fyodorovich Makarov later developed the Makarov PM pistol for the 9x18mm Makarov cartridge in 1948.
Throughout the latter half of the 20th century, it became the standard military cartridge in the Soviet Union and the Eastern Bloc, akin to the 9x19mm Parabellum in NATO and the Western Bloc. The Soviet military required their ammunition to be incompatible with NATO firearms.
